Remembering

Charity L. Shields

Here you will see the Legacy a great woman leaves behind; she'll always be missed; yet never forgotten.

March 17, 1924 - July 21, 2022

After prayerful Consideration Charity attended the Rock Bethel Baptist Church under Pastor Miller, serving as a soloist and worship leader for the next 10-years. In 1957, sister Charity recognized the pastoral calling of Reverend Ellison Wetherspoon. She began her new work with great joy as she understood that she was met for a higher calling. Charity Assisted in the establishment of New Light Baptist Church serving as a women leader, program coordinator, project manager, counselor, and more; as her passion bucket for helping those in need could never be filled.

In 1976, Rev Witherspoon left this world to join our savior but made sure Charity and the members of NLBC was in good hands as Rev. Naron Lewis began to pastor New Light. Sister charity was a standout, in both actions and in style. Rev Lewis rewarded her actions and leadership by elevating her to the office of church mother; and her elegance and fashionable style kept her safely guarded over the years by her 16 grandsons and great grandson.

In 1983, when Rev Lewis transitioned into eternity, she continued the ministry, giving so many pastors the opportunity to come into NL and speak the word of God; with each one of them giving us memories that will last a lifetime. For example, we were taught to cherish time, how to stay in the race, and we learned why God loved the world; just to name a few.

In the mid 80s Mother Charity gave a young, up and coming pastor a chance; and fell in love with the way he delivered the word. This man had the same passion for spreading the gospel, reminding her of the passion that she also has. Like coach Weaver, this newcomer was given the nod, and the ball to lead NL into the new millennium; and his name is Benedict A Dorsey.

I am the way, the truth, & the life.
